Political Parties in Georgia

Activities of political parties in Georgia are regulated by the Organic law on Citizens’ Political Unions adopted in October 31, 1997. Since then up to date Ministry of Justice of Georgia has registered 213 political unions. 10 among them were officially stricken off from the list, therefore there are 203 political parties registered for today.

Registration of the political unions is executed by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia. In order to be registered the following documents have to be presented to the Ministry of Justice:

a) Application with signature(s) of party leader(s);

b) Party’s Constituent Assembly Report certified by the Notary Public;

c) List of no less then 1000 members with names, surnames, dates of birth, ID number, working and residence addresses, telephone numbers, and signatures;

d) Party Rules;

e) Certificate of Party’s legal address and phone number;

f) Signature(s) of the person(s) responsible for being a Party representative certified by the Notary Public;

g) Sketches of seal, emblem and other symbols if such are used;

h) Receipt confirming the payment of registration fee (500 GEL).

The Central Election Commission is registering Parties for participation in elections. Party shall be registered if it has a representative in the Parliament or if it presents signatures of 50 000 supporters for parliamentary elections and 30 000 for local self-governmental elections.

 

In order to participate in local self-governmental elections of May 30, 2010 36 political unions applied to the Central Election Commission. Ten among them were refused to be registered.

The following parties are left without registration as they failed to present signatures:

1. Political union “Council of Workers of Georgia”

2. Party “Neutral Georgia”

3. Political union “Party for Protection of Labor Rights”

4. Georgian Conservative (Monarchist) Party

5. Political union “Lawyers of Georgia”

6. People’s Party

7. Merab Kostava’s Society

8. Political union “Society of Patriots “Samshoblo”

9. Political organization “Mamuli”

10. Greens Party of Georgia
